St John the Evangelist, St Johns Road, Crowborough, East Sussex, TN6 1RZ
St John’s Church Crowborough has a responsibility to promote the welfare and safety of all children, young persons and vulnerable adults.
Baptism (also known as ‘Christening’) marks the beginning of a journey of faith, which means following Jesus and becoming a member of the local and worldwide Christian family, the Church.
In the Church of England we baptise (Christen) infants as well as adults. Since baptism involves making a decision and promises before God, when we baptise infants, parents and Godparents make those promises on behalf of the child. Godparents will promise to lead the child along the Christian journey of faith, and so it is essential that they are already baptised themselves. In the case of an adult being baptised these promises are made personally, and usually in the context of a Confirmation service.
There is no charge made for baptisms, and we would be delighted if you wish to have your child baptised here at St John’s.
We have infant baptism services on the fourth Sunday of the month at 12 noon. Due to the relatively small space available we usually limit the number of baptisms to three at any given service, so your first preference may not be available. Also, we do not have baptisms during Lent.
There is a lot more information about infant baptism on the Church of England website at:
